Getting Married at San Francisco City Hall — Everything You Need to Know
San Francisco City Hall is one of the most iconic and breathtaking places to get married in the Bay Area. With its grand architecture, romantic light, and timeless elegance, it’s no wonder couples from all over the world choose this stunning location to say “I do.”
As a San Francisco-based photographer who has captured countless weddings at City Hall, I’m here to walk you through everything you need to know — from logistics to photography tips — to make your day seamless and unforgettable.
Why Choose SF City Hall for Your Wedding?
Architectural beauty: With its sweeping staircase, marble floors, and soaring dome, City Hall offers a timeless and dramatic backdrop.
Intimate & accessible: Whether you’re planning an elopement, a civil ceremony with family, or a grand celebration, the space feels intimate yet grand.

Book a marriage license appointment online (you’ll need to do this before your ceremony). You’ll both need to be present with a valid ID.mn.
Add context to your column. Help visitors understand the value they can get from your products and services.
There are a few ways to get married at City Hall:
Civil Ceremony (Rotunda): $108. A quick 5-10 minute ceremony performed by a Deputy Marriage Commissioner.
One-Hour Private Ceremony (Mayor’s Balcony or 4th Floor): $1,000–1,500. Reserved space for you and up to 100 guests.
Evening or Weekend Events: For full weddings or receptions. Prices vary and must be booked well in advance.
City Hall opens at 8:00 AM. If you want portraits without crowds, I highly recommend early morning sessions. Morning light is soft and magical here.
Photography Tips & My Process
Decide How Much Photography Coverage You Need
This is where planning makes a difference.
For most couples getting married at San Francisco City Hall, I recommend:
2 Hours
Perfect for:
Ceremony coverage
Grand Staircase portraits
Fourth Floor Gallery photos
A few family groupings
3–4 Hours
Ideal if you want:
Getting ready coverage
Extended portraits
Outfit change
A second San Francisco location (like a cable car, Palace of Fine Arts, or North Beach)
City Hall moves quickly. Having enough time ensures you’re not rushing through the most iconic spaces.

What to Wear
Go as formal or relaxed as you’d like — it’s your day! Many brides wear classic white dresses or jumpsuits, and grooms often opt for suits or semi-formal attire. Comfortable shoes are a good idea (those marble stairs are no joke!), and I’m always happy to provide outfit guidance.

How to Make Your City Hall Wedding Feel Personal
Even though it’s a civil ceremony, there are simple ways to make it meaningful:
Private vow exchange before or after
A bouquet that complements the architecture
Inviting close family for an intimate gathering
Planning a celebratory dinner afterward
City Hall weddings are about intention. You’re choosing intimacy over performance — and that makes it powerful.
